Bijbels Museum (Bible Museum)
The Bible Museum takes the Good Book as its starting point for an exploration in objects, images, and installations of biblical geography and history. The museum is located in twin patrician canal houses with a lovely courtyard garden, dating from 1662 and designed by the noted architect Philip Vingboons. The place would be worth visiting for its historic interest alone--its main ceiling was painted with mythological scenes in 1717. The collection includes models of ancient Jerusalem, the Temple of Solomon, and the Tabernacle; archaeological finds from Israel, Palestine, and Egypt; and paintings of biblical scenes. Among the Bibles on display are the first Bible printed in the Low Countries, dating from 1477, and the first edition of the authorized Dutch translation, from 1637.
